Shargole

Shargole is a picturesque village about 35 Kmts on the right side of Kargil- Leh road with a mixed population of Budhist and Muslim. The main attraction is a small monastery perched in a cliff. The interior of this small monastery has very beautiful wall paintings.

       An exciting four-days trek from Shergole leads, to Suru Valley passing Safi La and Rusila Passes, into the Suru Valley. Safi a high-altitude village, has a mixed Muslim –Budhist population and lies between the two passes. From the Rusila one can trek either to Sankoo or, southwards, through the glacier-rich Rangdum Pass, to the Rangdum village and monastery.

Mulbekh Fokar

  • Mulbekh is a valley at a distance of 42 Kms form Kargil on Kargil – Leh road (highway). The main attraction ofMulbekh is 9 metered 7th century rock sculpture of the ‘Maitreya’ the future Budha and a Monastery with beautiful wall painting and statues. Among the ancient monuments there are remains of a fort and a Mosque of historical importance. The Mulbekh Khar sits atop the Halo-bark cliff. It was the capital of the local ruler at a time in the past. It was set on fire during Zorawas Singh’s invasion (c.1835). It is now in ruins. A monastery has been built within the precincts of the old fort. Near the cliff is a historic inscription etched at the behest of King Dragspa Bum Lde. The remains of the graves of King Bum Lde. Chhoiz Bum lde and his Muslim queen can still be found.

  • Fokar Urgiyan Rzong In a side valley of Fokar about 8 Kms further up streams from Shargole is the cave monastery of Urgiyan Rzong, the famous meditation retreat of Guru Padma Sambhava. The hermitage is tucked away behind an amazing natural mountain fortress. Handprints of this great saint and some other natural figures can be seen here. Devotees gather here on the 10th day of 5 month of the Tibetan calendar to mark the birthday of the Guru.

  • Fokar The delipedated Chaq Shing Khar is located atop a hillock near Karabma hamlet. It was the capital of a kingdom that included Suru –Karchay, Mulbekh.

  • Rgyal Wakha Further upstream of Mulbekh is the picturesque Rgyal village tucked away in vertical cliff of conglomerate formation. From afar the village looks like beehive above the cliff and have breath view of the surroundings. A small village monastery is seated in one of the hanging caves neatly whitewashed.
